Three Times Is What It Took
I have tried to watch this film 3 different times over a long period of months and finally I finished the mess. Oscar Micheaux the self-made man, writer, producer, director of this film is a famous Black film pioneer, but you'd never know it from this film. A lot of static camera work of a nightclub show with live music on film inter-cut with a couple of impossible to follow story lines with a lot of letters, telegrams and newpaper article inserted to move the story along. To be fair, a few scenes are brilliant, but lost along the way among the more atrocious ones. A lot of silent footage with music and sound effects as well. Unless a lot is missing, this runs 57 minutes, I have no explanation for it other than to squeeze nickels out of poor, dumb Blacks during the depression. It's that bad. I've seen other Micheaux films and they were better by comparison for shoe-string productions. For Black history month and maybe not then. Curio.
